Using Automatically Generated Students' Clickable Conceptual Models for E-tutoring

چکیده
Computer methods for evaluating student’s knowledge have traditionally been based on Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) or fillin-the-blank exercises, which do not provide a reliable basis upon which to assess student’s underlying misconceptions. Because of this lack, we have devised and implemented a procedure for automatically deriving clickable students’ conceptual models from their free-text answers. A student’s conceptual model can be defined as a network of interrelated concepts associated with a confidence value that indicates how well each student knows a concept. Several knowledge representation formats are used to show the generated conceptual model to the student. Furthermore, students can click on the concepts to get more information about them. 22 English Studies students are taking advantage of this new resource to review their Pragmatics course. Initial results show that they have found it very useful and claim that it is a good support for their review of the subject.

Showing Automatically Generated Students' Conceptual Models to Students and Teachers
A student conceptual model can be defined as a set of interconnected concepts associated with an estimation value that indicates how well these concepts are used by the students. It can model just one student or a group of students, and can be represented as a concept map, conceptual diagram or one of several other knowledge representation formats. Some e-assessment systems that automatically e...
متن کاملRefinement-Based Student Modeling and Automated Bug Library Construction
A critical component of model-based intelligent tutoring systems is a mechanism for capturing the conceptual state of the student, which enables the system to tailor its feedback to suit individual strengths and weaknesses. To be useful such a modeling technique must be practical , in the sense that models are easy to construct, and effective , in the sense that using the model actually impacts...
متن کاملA Study on the Possibility of Automatically Estimating the Confidence Value of Students' Knowledge in Generated Conceptual Models
We propose a new metric to automatically evaluate the confidence that a student knows a certain concept included in his or her conceptual model. The conceptual model is defined as a simplified representation of the concepts and relationships among them that a student keeps in his or her mind about an area of knowledge. Each area of knowledge comprises several topics and each topic several conce...
متن کاملConceptual Design of a Requirement-based E-tutoring Course at Vienna University of Technology: Increasing Students’ Motivation by Using Videoconferencing
Application of e-learning tools highly modifies tutors’ requirement profiles. Once teachers deploy regular tutors as e-tutors, further competencies (e-skills) are needed to be able to coach students within academic settings. Most publications about education and training to qualified e-tutors show either unique or rather restrictive requirements or are highly extensive and therefore can’t be ap...
متن کاملAutomatic Problem Generation in Constraint-Based Tutors
Constraint-Based Modelling (CBM) is a student modelling technique that is rapidly maturing. We have implemented several tutors using CBM and demonstrated its suitability to open-ended domains in particular. A problem with open-ended and complex domain models is their large size, necessitating a comprehensive problem set in order to provide sufficient exercises for extended learning sessions. We...
